The Ganges River

The Ganges River

The Ganges is the second largest river in India, it is 1,557 miles long and 200 to 400 miles wide, the average depth is 52 feet, and the maximum depth is 100 feet . It is considered holy by the Hindus and worshiped as the Goddess Ganga. It is import historically because many provincial or imperial capitals are located on the banks. The river supports the highest density of humans. The story of the Ganges is that of India's civilization and culture, of the rise and fall of empires, of great and proud cities.

Many Hindus believe life is incomplete without taking a bath in the Ganges at least once in their lives. Many Hindu families keep a vial of water from the Ganges in their house. This is done because it is a auspicious to have water of the Holy Ganges in the house, and also so that if someone is dying, that person can drink its water. Many Hindus believe that the water from the Ganges can cleanse a person's soul of all past
sins, and that it can also cure the sick.
